Gisteren maakte ik een rit van 250 km van Levanto naar Ventimiglia. De rit begon soepel, tot ik in een tunnel in een file belandde. Daar stond ik 2 uur lang volledig stil vanwege een vrachtwagenbrand aan het einde van de tunnel. Uiteindelijk kwam ik rond 3 uur in Ventimiglia aan. De kosten voor de snelweg bedroegen ongeveer ā¬29,-.
Momenteel ben ik op camping Por La Mar, net buiten Ventimiglia in het plaatsje Latte. Vanaf deze camping bieden ze een shuttle service aan naar Menton (Frankrijk) of Ventimiglia. Vanochtend ben ik met de shuttle service naar station Menton-Garavan gegaan, wat me ā¬12,- kostte. Voor groepen is dit goedkoper, maar omdat ik alleen reis betaal ik iets meer.
Vanaf station Menton-Garavan nam ik de trein richting Monaco, waarbij een retourtje me ā¬6,20 kostte en de reistijd ongeveer 20 minuten bedroeg. In Monaco stapte ik recht in het hart van de stad uit.
Monaco is een prachtige stad met veel luxe. Grote jachten, dure restaurants, chique winkels en tal van dure sportauto’s. Mijn bankrekening liet helaas geen ruimte voor deze prachtige jachten.
Ik begon bij de haven, waarna ik langs het Oceanographique museum en de kathedraal van Monaco liep voordat ik aankwam bij het paleis van de prins van Monaco. Hier nam ik een pauze om een panini te eten voordat ik verder wandelde naar de andere kant van de haven.
Aan de andere kant van de haven liep ik naar het Casino van Monaco, een prachtig gebouw met tal van luxe sportwagens voor de deur. Net toen ik mijn statief buiten wilde opzetten, werd ik vriendelijk verzocht door de casinobewaker om mijn statief weg te doen en niet op de stoep te zitten. Een beetje overdreven, maar regels zijn regels.
Langs het casino bevindt zich het Fairmont hotel, waar de beroemde Fairmont-hairpinbocht ligt, die wordt gebruikt tijdens de Grand Prix van Monaco. Hier nam ik even de tijd om te kijken, want veel sportwagens reden ook over deze weg. Daarna liep ik via de achterkant van het casino terug naar de haven om nog wat meer te rond te kijken.
Ik had online gezien dat Menton een prachtig dorp is en dat je vanaf een bepaald punt geweldige foto’s kunt maken. Daarom besloot ik op tijd naar de trein te gaan om net voor zonsondergang terug te zijn in Menton. Hier had ik de gelegenheid om enkele prachtige foto’s te maken.
Morgen zet ik mijn reis voort richting Benidorm. Hoewel Google Maps aangeeft dat de rit 12 uur duurt, heb ik de afgelopen weken geleerd dat met de camper de reistijd waarschijnlijk langer zal zijn. Daarom heb ik besloten om in de buurt van Valencia een camperplaats te zoeken om te overnachten.
Ventimiglia, Monaco and Menton
Yesterday, I took a 250 km journey from Levanto to Ventimiglia. The trip started smoothly until I got stuck in a tunnel due to a traffic jam caused by a truck fire at the end of the tunnel. I was completely stationary for 2 hours. Eventually, I arrived in Ventimiglia around 3 pm. The toll costs for the highway were approximately ā¬29.
Currently, I am at Camping Por La Mar, just outside Ventimiglia in the town of Latte. This campsite offers a shuttle service to Menton (France) or Ventimiglia. This morning, I used the shuttle service to go to Menton-Garavan station, which cost me ā¬12. For groups, this is cheaper, but as a solo traveler, I pay a bit more.
From Menton-Garavan station, I took the train towards Monaco, with a round trip costing me ā¬6.20 and a travel time of about 20 minutes. In Monaco, I stepped right into the heart of the city.
Monaco is a beautiful city with a lot of luxuryālarge yachts, expensive restaurants, chic shops, and numerous expensive sports cars. Unfortunately, my bank account didn’t allow for those beautiful yachts.
I started at the harbor, then walked past the Oceanographic Museum and the Monaco Cathedral before reaching the Prince’s Palace of Monaco. Here, I took a break to eat a panini before continuing my walk to the other side of the harbor.
On the other side of the harbor, I walked to the Monaco Casino, a magnificent building with many luxury sports cars parked in front. Just as I was about to set up my tripod outside, I was kindly asked by the casino guard to put away my tripod and not sit on the sidewalk. A bit excessive, but rules are rules.
Next to the casino is the Fairmont hotel, where the famous Fairmont hairpin turn is located, used during the Monaco Grand Prix. I took some time here to watch, as many sports cars were driving on this road. Then, I walked through the back of the casino to the harbor to explore a bit more.
I had seen online that Menton is a beautiful village and that you can take great photos from a certain point. Therefore, I decided to go to the train early to be back in Menton just before sunset. Here, I had the opportunity to take some beautiful photos.
Tomorrow, I will continue my journey towards Benidorm. Although Google Maps indicates a 12-hour drive, I have learned in the past weeks that with the camper, the travel time is likely to be longer. Therefore, I have decided to find a camper site near Valencia to spend the night.
